Take two thick slices of Noonie's day old bread, smear Honey Cup honey mustard
liberally over both. Cover both slices with green leaf lettuce. Then on one slice only lay smoked turkey on the lettuce,
a tomato slice on the turkey and sprinkle it with shredded carrot. Then on the lay a slice of provolone cheese over the
carrot then a green pepper ring on top of the cheese. Sprikle with sprouts. Cover with the other slice, lettuce side down.
The letuce should be stuck to the bread with honey mustard so it doesn't fall off when you turn it upside down to cover the
sandwich. Slice sandwich in half with a knife. Wrap in tightly in plastic wrap. Use too much wrap. Tape on label. Tadaaa!
Weighs one pound. Costs Four Bucks.

RECOUNT!

Breaking News...
I just got an email from Kurt Wright. He WILL be asking for a recount. Kurt wrote:
"...I have decided that I am going to request a recount--not because I expect it to change the result, but because so many people have literally begged me to do this.
In many ways, I would prefer to move on--for myself personally that is--but I do agree with people like yourself Haik who believe this is the right opportunity to take a close look at how the system worked. This is not about me, it is about the process. I accept the result and am gratified to have come so close and to have actually received the most 1st place votes--and even won on the second round as well. I also understood that this was the system we have in place and knew this result was a possiblity. If voters do not like this system they have the ability to change it--but that will not come from me..."
Developing story...
Update 11:42am:
*The Clerk Treasurer's office confirms that Kurt has requested a recount and says that by state law the city council must convene a special recount meeting within five days of Kurt's request.
*Charlie Papillo of the "Charlie and Ernie" show on 620AM WVMT tells me Kurt broke the news on their show first this morning. Darn. I thought I had the scoop.
*Shay has some quotes on this from various officials over at Blurt.
Update 12:55pm:
*Kurt tells me he was typing his email to me while talking to Charlie and Ernie on the phone, so they scooped me by just minutes. I trying to handle coming in a close second as well as Kurt.
Its interesting to note that it would take only 126 votes to kick the IRV into the 4th round. If there was somehow a mistake and it did go into the 4th round Kurt would win in a landslide probably
I still can't understand how under 9000 people voted. It just does not make any sense. Only 5137 people voted outside outside of Ward 4 and 7. Only 691 people voted in Ward 2. Crazy.
Good on Kurt. I suspect this will be very educational.
One gripe: He really shouldn't say he "won" on the 2nd round, that just fans the anti-IRV flames, he led on the 2nd round... I suspect he knows this though.
At first I thought a recount was a good idea. I've changed my mind. Burlington has done tons of work educating the public about IRV. They voted for it, overwhelming. Exit polls showed the voters liked it last time and they liked it this time. If people are confused about how it works, explain it to them. It's very obvious. Montroll voters preferred Kiss. Very simple. Kurt knows that and he should explain it to all those folks who are "pleading" with him to ask for a recount because they "can't understand" how he could lose after two rounds. Kurt continues to say he wants a recount but he doesn't want to encourage a citizen effort to overturn IRV. What he leaves out is "hint, hint".
Because I thought it was a way to instill confidence in IRV. There's already confidence in IRV. It's a political ploy by Wright and nothing else. If these 100 people don't understand, get them together in Contios and explain it to them.
I doubt it is a political ploy by Wright. He has nothing to prove. He is out of politics in Burlington and no one at the state house gives a shot what happens with the mayor of Burlington.
I would seriously like to know the political ploy. Really out of genuine curiosity.
Because I thought it was a way to instill confidence in IRV. There's already confidence in IRV.
That's a logical non sequitur. How did you go from A) Because I thought it was a way to instill confidence in IRV; to B) There's already confidence in IRV.
You gotta have something in the middle there for your reasoning to make sense.
No there is not already confidence in IRV. Maybe if you took your head out of your ass for a few moments you'd find that out. Yes, there are some people who have confidence in IRV and Yes, there are some people that do not. Just because you and some of your yuppie liberal friends are confident doesn't mean the whole Goddamn city is all of sudden. Wake up you self-centered prick.
Too bad asshole if you think it's a bad idea. It's not for you to decide and we are having a recount so shut up, stop whining, and live with it."
Wow. Great level of dialogue right there. Would that be from the Wright campaign? One of the reasons employees of the city are nervous that Wright will win! He may be a nice guy but those around him sure aren't.
Anonymous, did you see Haik's posts about the memory cards used for IRV and the fact that there is no way to verify that there were not already votes on the cards before ballots are cast? That has caused people to wonder about the integrity of the voting. It is not about a lack of confidence in IRV, per se, but a lack of confidence in the way IRV is executed in Burlington. The recount will put at ease the minds of people, such as Haik, who want verification that the memory cards were not tampered with.
Frankly, and this is not to anonymous specifically, I am sick of people being so uncivilized toward the people who want a recount. If you dare question the greatness of IRV, you are [insert juvenile name-calling here]. Whatever. Grow up.
Flip everyone who questions IRV. Get over it, your neo-Silly conservative agenda failed, you dumb flipping poops. You just can't get over the fact that Bob is a better politician.
Also, do you dumb poop IRV questioners. Stop spending my tax dollars and useless bull poop recounts for your figless agenda, you flipping cork sinkers. You are a bunch of blunt munching complainers. Grow the flip up you pieces of worthless grassy child poop.
"He really shouldn't say he 'won' on the 2nd round, that just fans the anti-IRV flames, he led on the 2nd round... I suspect he knows this though."
OF COURSE he knows this...it's just more whining about how he actually lost the election. Boo hoo...
"Kurt knows that and he should explain it to all those folks who are 'pleading' with him to ask for a recount because they 'can't understand' how he could lose after two rounds. Kurt continues to say he wants a recount but he doesn't want to encourage a citizen effort to overturn IRV. What he leaves out is 'hint, hint'."
Exactly, almost every, single online example that I've seen of how the IRV system works has a hypothetical election where the candidate that is "ahead" at the end of the first round (with a plurality of the vote) ends up losing a majority of the vote after several IRV rounds. Anyone that was "surprised" by the result this last time around simply hasn't been paying attention, and they are waaaay too many people that are feeding off of that ignorance now, period.
"did you see Haik's posts about the memory cards used for IRV and the fact that there is no way to verify that there were not already votes on the cards before ballots are cast?"
And did you further read that ALL of those "concerns" turned out to not be valid in the end when they were investigated?? Of course not...sheesh...

I can imagine that it would be hard on Kurt to drag this out, but I am excited about the IRV votes being verified.
Great work, Haik! We heard it here first.
