Take two thick slices of Noonie's day old bread, smear Honey Cup honey mustard
liberally over both. Cover both slices with green leaf lettuce. Then on one slice only lay smoked turkey on the lettuce,
a tomato slice on the turkey and sprinkle it with shredded carrot. Then on the lay a slice of provolone cheese over the
carrot then a green pepper ring on top of the cheese. Sprikle with sprouts. Cover with the other slice, lettuce side down.
The letuce should be stuck to the bread with honey mustard so it doesn't fall off when you turn it upside down to cover the
sandwich. Slice sandwich in half with a knife. Wrap in tightly in plastic wrap. Use too much wrap. Tape on label. Tadaaa!

The following is a question Michael Wood-Lewis has for the mayoral candidates... ******
"A surprising two-thirds of Burlington public school buildings are not fully accessible to people with disabilities. Edmunds Middle School is the worst offender. It is, arguably, the most prominent school building in the State of Vermont, sitting, as it does, on Main Street in our largest city. Yet, this public school building and community meeting place is segregated. Students, parents and grandparents, teachers, and community members who use wheelchairs are not welcome. They are, effectively, barred from entering.
In the decades since our federal disability civil rights laws were enacted, we have done almost nothing to remedy this problem here in Burlington. So, my question for each of the candidates...
If elected Mayor, what steps will you take to concretely fix this problem within the next two years?"
That is the job of the school board and school administrration. If Burlington schools have been this way for so long why did the schools seek millions of dollars for a new high school athletic field first??
Thanks for posting my question, Haik. And to "Anonymous," as we've seen lately, the City Council and Mayor/CAO are directly tied to the school funding process. And, historically, Burlington has underfunded our schools for decades now, resulting in the horrid condition of our buildings. I don't know why the BHS athletic complex was prioritized, so I'm in no position to judge whether it was a good or bad decision... but it is obvious to me that we need to open up Edmunds to all of our children and citizens.
The Council and Mayor are tied into the school funding process only because the school department was utterly unable to come up with realistic bonding numbers. Schools have not been underfunded compared to the activities of city government. School budgets and overall taxpayer contributions to schools have grown exponentially in comparison. Ifschool buildings are falling down, I blame it on miserable administration at the school level. Teachers' salaries have never been underfunded.
Why did Burlington build an athletic field/track first? Basically, the athletic facilities serve a large population of students. Track, for one, is a sport for everyone, no matter what your socioeconomic level. Athletic events bring members in from the community. I believe that was money well spent, unlike the magnet school expenditures, which will serve only a small percentage of students (and the consciences of our school board members).
I feel horrible that Edmunds is not accessible to all. However, Burlington does offer Hunt Middle School, which is accessible to all. Not the best work-around, but it is a work-around.
Seen it, thanks. See also the Free Press editorial of yesterday that states: "The city spends $15,516 per pupil, second only to South Burlington in the county."
