Secret Sandwich
Take two thick slices of Noonie's day old bread, smear Honey Cup honey mustard liberally over both. Cover both slices with green leaf lettuce. Then on one slice only lay smoked turkey on the lettuce, a tomato slice on the turkey and sprinkle it with shredded carrot. Then on the lay a slice of provolone cheese over the carrot then a green pepper ring on top of the cheese. Sprikle with sprouts. Cover with the other slice, lettuce side down. The letuce should be stuck to the bread with honey mustard so it doesn't fall off when you turn it upside down to cover the sandwich. Slice sandwich in half with a knife. Wrap in tightly in plastic wrap. Use too much wrap. Tape on label. Tadaaa! Weighs one pound. Costs Four Bucks.

Just a quick question:

Both Dan and Montroll have websites but I haven't seen anything from Kiss or Kurt.

Do they have websites at all? Trying to begin the process of ranking my preferences.

Voting for Dan as #1 and trying to figure out where to rank the others.

Kevin Curley has a website.

Can you tell us why Dan Smith is your #1 choice? Is it because he has a website? Is so wouldn't that make Montroll your #2 automatically?

I want a fresh perspective in city government. He's young and has some real world experience...especially around jobs and the new green economy. Plus, I like how he's an Independent.

Andy will probably NOT be my second choice. I supported Hinda Miller back in 2006 and I was really disheartened by the fact that he never lifted a finger to help her. Really made me sad. Kurt will probably be my second choice and then Andy. I won't vote for Kiss. He's a weak mayor and has no leadership skills. Leopold is really the one running the City.

Can you expound on that? What experience are you referring to? Can Smith claim credit for helping to create jobs?

Leopold is really the one running the City.

You've touched on Mayor Kiss's Achilles's Heal. I wish he'd have fired Leopold before election season. Now it would just look like a desperation move.

I still like Kiss because I think in terms of the big picture stuff things are tending in the right direction. The new zoning law seems to be more good than bad, and street maintenance has been improving. The agreement Kiss got on UVM's payments to the city was outstanding.

But I would agree that we've seen enough of Mr. Leopold.

I don't know why you would expect Andy to support Hinda. She wasn't a good candidate and I'm still grateful to Kevin Curley and Lisa Lindahl for sparing us "Mayor Jogbra."

Dan Smith has potential, but his candidacy does not remind me of 1981, as I've heard others say. That's seems Orwellian to me. Kiss is the candidate who most resembles Sanders in policy.

I'll give Dan Smith a look when he talks details - That's not due to happen for a month or two. I'm so sick of this empty rhetoric of buzzwords like "change""youth""fresh" and "energy".

Mr. Smith was INCREDIBLE on the Charlie & Ernie show - very slick - but then I realized he didn't say anything about anything. That's understandable at this point in the campaign, I guess.

I'm also still trying to figure out what GBIC (his "real-world experience") is all about and what their affiliation is with the Chamber of Commerce. I'm not a huge fan of the Chamber.

Hinda was/is kind of a right-winger, good on Andy if he didn't support her, though I didn't notice that.

I WROTE THIS BELOW BUT FORGOT THAT I SHOULD HAVE POSTED IT HERE.

The question is whether Kiss actually had anything to do with that or if it was Leopold? I mean, these are legitimate questions. I would argue, however, that his biggest problem is the Waterfront and the Cate issue. It just felt overtly political to me.

In terms of Dan Smith's real world experience...just a basic understanding on the green economy. I would really prefer someone who isn't a politician right now to help lift us out of the economy. I'm struggling to find work right now and I think he's got the best shot. Just a fresh perspective and some new ideas.

However, I don't know where the other candidates stand. In terms of the issues, I agree with Andy...I just don't like his personality.

In terms of the UVM question though, I don't think we can give him all the credit. Leopold's hands were all in that pot and UVM made several generous concessions in terms of the Fire Department and Road service. So, don't give Kiss the credit. There were many other forces at play there.

All I can say, though, is that this is going to be a fun Mayoral race to watch. You got people from all political stripes and IRV (no more spoilers). Plus, I just want to see Kurt and Andy gang up on Bob.

Overheard at a Burlington holiday party... "never thought I'd see the day when Burlington's general election for mayor featured one democrat and three republicans... Wright, Smith and Leopold."

How is it that as the rest of the country tilts away from the hard right, our Gov., Lt. Gov. and biggest-city Mayor are all Republicans!! What happened to VT?

  • At December 23, 2008 1:53 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said…

Smith seems qualified to be on one of the City's commissions... but Mayor? Did I hear correctly that he tried to get on the Planning Commission and couldn't even pull that off? Seems like he could use a dose of real-life responsibility (kids, business owner, etc... volunteering for stuff ain't the same thing) before taking on the Mayor's load.

  • At December 24, 2008 12:19 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said…

Well, I hardly think that Bob Kiss was qualified to be Mayor but he got it. Same with Kurt and Andy.

It's going to be a weird election.

    Prediction:

    1. Smith
    2. Montroll
    3. Wright
    4. Kiss

  • At December 24, 2008 3:29 AM, Blogger RealityBlogger said…

Candidate Kiss was totally qualified: he directed CVOEO, a very effective organization with a HUGE budget focused on helping ordinary Vermonters, He also served as a solid State Rep. in Montpelier.

I've certainly been somewhat disappointed with his mayoral experience but I'm willing to admit he did a solid job managing the budget ina responsibly way while maintaining services at previous levels.

    My prediction currently:
    1) Smith
    2) Kiss
    3) Wright
    4) Montroll

Don't you love IRV, I'm so psyched about what this voting method will do to the process, candidates will HAVE to be respectful to each other, I think that's great for our little city.

This is gonna be about issues, and the best person will probably win, then we can get behind them to get things done... despite my real suspicion toward Mr. Smith I have a lot of respect for all 4 candidates.

  • At December 24, 2008 10:42 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said…

The Free Press had a great article about the race today. Kurt and Andy are just digging into Kiss and they're going to tear him apart. Dan Smith is doing his best to stay above the fray.

I'll give it to Kiss -- he did manage the budgets but we can't forget that a lot of the groundwork was done by Clavelle and Leopold HAS been helping out in the office. From what I hear from City Councilors (not naming names)...but everyone says (including some folks on this blog) that Leopold runs the City and Bob just sits in the office and goes out for lunch.

I really don't have any concerns about Dan Smith. I'm probably voting for Kurt because I want to mix things up a little bit and then vote for Dan and Andy. Bob Kiss just has not inspired me to be involved and he seems to have a very bad relationship with the Council.

Out with the Old. In with the New.

So far from the comments I've read, everybody seems to be dismissive of Kiss and his electoral possibilities. Last time around, it seemed as if Hinda Miller was on her way to being crowned Mayor of Burlington and the election was just a formality. Nobody gave Kiss much of a chance, and Hinda's underwhelming campaign and negative press along with some good campaigning on his part swept him into office. Now it isn't to say that people will still support him with the numbers he got 3 years ago. I just have the feeling that he's not going to end dead last and has a better chance of retaining his post as Mayor than Dan Smith would have of becoming one. To be honest, Montroll and Wright have been in the public sphere more often and due to that, look as if they have shown more dedication to city issues than Dan Smith has. Kiss, Montroll and Wright have higher name recognition than Smith does. I believe it will in the end come down to Kiss and Montroll or Wright. It's entirely possible that Kiss will be brought down by the city's handling of Cate and the presence of Leopold in City Hall. Just don't tell me he'll finish last. I find that belief dubious at best.

  • At December 25, 2008 11:44 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said…

I think he'll come in second or third. The next mayor will be either Wright or Smith. Montroll doesn't have a chance.

    He's a very underwhelming candidate.

  • At December 25, 2008 3:06 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said…

Anon- I pretty much agree, but I think we should give Mr. Montroll a break.

I just watched the Ward 1 NPA meeting on Channel 17. Smith and Montroll each spoke and answered questions. It seemed like Montroll is in it to win it this time- he's clearly been working on his campaign/speaking skills and thinking a lot about the city and specific proposals.

At any rate, I was wicked surprised to see a very engaged Councilor Montroll outshine Dan "Mr. Slick" Smith. It could have been the setting, there were only like 8 people in the room.

    You can watch it here:
    http://www.cctv.org/watch-tv/programs/ward-1-npa-meeting-0

Let's not count anyone out, the campaign is just getting rolling and IRV is going to make it interesting.

Christina- I thought that Mayor Kiss inherited some fiscal trouble from Clavelle: something about the pension or retirement fund being short-changed to pay for other stuff, I don't remember clearly. Haik, you wrote about this right?

Whatever, more importantly, Merry Christmas and/or a Happy New Year to all.

  • At December 27, 2008 2:55 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said…

I believe someone else made the point that this was more of a group effort. Kiss's only claim to fame in the Legislature was a lighting bill (you can check it out on Seven Days) and he has been a very lackluster mayor. I mean, he just doesn't inspire anyone. He started a fight almost right off with Tom Trembley and the Burlington PD and voiced support for Burlington as a sanctuary city. Moreover, this whole issue about Kiss doing ALL the work for the UVM tax excemption issue is hogwash. He was part of the discussions and played a role in the discussions but let's not forget about UVM, the Council, the Police, the Firefighters and so on. Don't give the man credit for that. There were multiple people involved and I know for a fact that Leopold was the driving force behind most of it.

The Cate issue is what disturbs me the most. I think he really screwed up by not being more transparent and keeping people in the dark for so long. If you're spending tax payer dollars on an investigation like this, the people have a right to know. If you are spending your own money, then don't.

I just think he's had his chance and I don't like his governing style. If he wins, more power to him but I'll put my faith in either Wright or Smith or Montroll. I trust them more then Kiss. At least, they are a little more inspiring.

This campaign is going to be about LEADERSHIP. Check out every candidate and that will be the theme of each candidates platform.
