Take two thick slices of Noonie's day old bread, smear Honey Cup honey mustard
liberally over both. Cover both slices with green leaf lettuce. Then on one slice only lay smoked turkey on the lettuce,
a tomato slice on the turkey and sprinkle it with shredded carrot. Then on the lay a slice of provolone cheese over the
carrot then a green pepper ring on top of the cheese. Sprikle with sprouts. Cover with the other slice, lettuce side down.
The letuce should be stuck to the bread with honey mustard so it doesn't fall off when you turn it upside down to cover the
sandwich. Slice sandwich in half with a knife. Wrap in tightly in plastic wrap. Use too much wrap. Tape on label. Tadaaa!
Weighs one pound. Costs Four Bucks.

Numb Gray Surrender II
Tuesday, October 28, 2008
It's really really gray and dark outside. Cloudy, cold and wet. This is my fist post this week. I haven't had too much to say.
I've written two serious pieces recently that seem to have died in committee. You see, I don't own a voice recorder so when I do an interview, I jot down what the person said and reconstruct it later. To make sure I don't misquote or mis-characterize my subject's words, I let them vet the piece before I publish it.
For instance, I finally finished writing up my interview with the owner's of Radio Deli months ago, but I can't publish it yet, because it's still languishing in their in-box awaiting review. Similarly another interview I did a couple of weeks ago, which would certainly be fascinating to my readers, also can't be published because I don't have the OK.
This blog would be a lot better if I had a voice recorder and a new camera. I'll have to work on getting those things before the local elections start shaping up in January.
So what's going on right now? Well we're one week from the presidential election. I guess I could talk about that. In the past I've voted in the morning before work, but I think Koko wants to go, so maybe the four of us will go together after five.
I vote in Ward 7, Chittenden District 3-2. How will I be voting?
Candidates: President/VP: Obama & Biden; US House: Welch; Governor: O'Connor; Lt. Gov: Blank; Treasurer: Blank; Secretary of State: Blank; Auditor: Martha Abbot; Attorney General: Blank; State Senator: Tim Ashe only or Blank; State Rep: Mark Larson; High Bailiff: Blank; Justice of the Peace: Ed Adrian, Tom Fleury, Jim Flint and Selene Hofer-Shall.
Ballot Items: 1. Bond to repave streets: Yes. 2. Tax increase for streets: No. (Ask me next year.) 3. Penny for Parks: No. (To pay for Adam Cate's vacation?)
I miss the Carpetbagger Report. Political Animal just isn't as good. Don't get me wrong, I still read it, but lately I've had to lean on Wonkette as a supplement.
So I figured 'Why not lump it all together in one post?'
First of all There's a new post up at Minor Heresies about the price of Oil. This is the smartest blog in Vermont.
Second- Here's an interesting blog post about The Fags, an old Burlington band you may remember. Here's a picture of band members Dana, Jason and Eugene. One bit of related trivia- Dana lived in Austin Texas at the same time as me and Neil Cleary.
Last- Here are a couple of commercials I can't stop watching. The second one (Share the Fantasy) was directed by Ridley Scott in 1979.
Human Rights Hearing: "Healthcare is a Human Right" Burlington City Hall, Contois Auditorium (149 Church St., Burlington) Thursday Oct 23 at 7:00 p.m.
The event will include the following listening panel: Rabbi Joshua Chasan, Ohavi Zedek Synagogue Jennifer Henry, RN Nurses Union President, Fletcher Allen Health Care Rebecca Smith Haslam, President, Burlington Education Association Rev. Sarah Flynn, ALL Souls Ministry in Vermont Roddy Cleary, former minister Unitarian Universalist Church in Burlington Al Robinson, Imani Health Institute Ann Goering, MD, Winooski Family Health Mohamed Abdi, Somali Bantu Association Hal Colston, Neighbor Keepers Mayor Bob Kiss, City of Burlington
Similar "Human Rights Forums" will be held all across the state, in the coming months as the Workers' Center continues its effort to fight for a just healthcare system that values human lives over profit — an attainable goal, given Vermont's passionate and engaged citizenry.
John Briggs over at the Free Press is reporting today that Adam Cate, the city's waterfront manager who has been suspended with pay since June for God-Knows-What, is appealing Parks Director Wayne Gross's disciplinary decision.
What that decision is, we don't know. We only know that Cate is appealing it to the Parks and Recreation Commission. From the Burlington Free Press:
Gross declined to discuss the nature of the charges against Cate, the scope of the investigation or his recommendation for discipline. He described the investigation as focusing on "a series of different issues related to the operation of the (Community) Boathouse and access to e-mail accounts."
The hearing before the commission has not been scheduled. Gross said it would be a closed hearing unless Cate asks that the public be admitted.
Cate's attorney couldn't be reached Monday for comment. Earlier, lawyer Sheldon Katz confirmed that the city had hired two private investigators. At least part of that investigation focused on Cate's possession of an e-mail from Ben Pacy of the Clerk-Treasurer's Office to the top union official in the Parks Department.
Pacy formerly was a Parks Department supervisor.
This kind of thing is infuriating. It's not right. It's not right. It's not right. Good government is transparent. It's open. I have been a pretty strong supporter of Bob Kiss throughout his term, but I have to be honest here. That support is eroding. There is no reason for everything to be so secretive. City Hall belongs to the people of Burlington. Not Ben Pacy. Not Johnathon Leopold.
One comment on this story at the the Free Press website is interesting. From "Sabin:"
Ben Pacy couldn’t get Gross’s job so he transfers to the treasurer’s office and starts romancing King Leopold on the idea of combining Public Works & Parks Department. Maybe a good idea, who knows. Cate breaks into Pacy’s e-mail and finds an invitation to a union official to meet off the record. Cate brings the e-mail to Gross who presents it to Kiss. Four days later Cate is suspended on the pretense of embezzlement. What are the chances that they realized Cate was stealing four days after the e-mail? Then the drama begins, Burlington Police is asked to investigate – no luck. Kiss not happy with the outcome hires the P.I. firm – batted zero. Shocker. Now what?

As the UVM community heads to the polls this November, environmental issues are a top concern. Campus has a strong desire to see more renewable energy production, a clean lake champlain, sustainable food production and a decrease in greenhouse gas emissions.
"UVM is represented by two of the strongest pro-environmental leaders in the statehouse," said Todd Bailey, executive director at the Vermont League of Conservation Voters. Mr. Bailey will be joined by David Blittersdorf, a leader in Vermont's renewable energy industry, to recognize the leadership role played by Representatives David Zuckerman and Chris Pearson."
I am withdrawing from the Ward Seven City Council race. After many conversations with my wife, and after serious consideration, I have decided that I will not be a candidate for City Councilor from Ward Seven in the March 2009 election.
I am grateful for all the encouragement to run that I have received from Democrats, Republicans and Independents of the new north end, but this is not my time to run. Seeing to the needs of my children and my family are my priority. For now at least, a run for office would be diversion from that priority, and splitting my time between family and city government would not be of adequate service to either.
I may decide to run next year or the year after, but for now my focus must stay on my family. Of course, I will keep spending a little time working on this blog, and on using it to cover the upcoming local races and the folks who actually do decide to run in them this cycle.
Thank you for your understanding and support, and thank you for reading BurlingtonPol.com. Visit often!
Caught in the crossfire of an eye-laser battle between former Democratic gubernatorial candidate Scudder Parker and former Republican city council candidate Charity Tensel, Ed Adrian and TJ Donovan wonder how long their invisible force field will hold out.

Thanksgiving is just around the corner. I'm thankful Pooopsie and her family expose my kids to so much spoken Russian. It's wonderful for cognition and for learing English better. Koko my boy turned four last week. Yanna my girl is about a year and a half old. When Poopsie pulled up in her Ford with the kids this evening, Koko was trying trying to get Yanna in trouble. "Yanna called me a *deleted*!" he said as I was unstrapping him from the back seat. "She can talk now?" I asked with surprise. "She spoke it in Russian!" He knows I can't speak Russian.
I'm also grateful for my ultra-commie, city-shouldn't-be-in-telecom, Burlington Telecom access to great channels like Current. Here's something I just watched on Current called "Sexy Girls Have It Easy." It's an interesting socio-anthropological case study on how sexy girls have it easy, produced by a very plain and very sexy gal with a lot of self-confidence.
Here's an item from Front Porch Forum. I donated money to restore this church a few years ago, so I'm going to try to stop by on Saturday to see the inside.
