Take two thick slices of Noonie's day old bread, smear Honey Cup honey mustard
liberally over both. Cover both slices with green leaf lettuce. Then on one slice only lay smoked turkey on the lettuce,
a tomato slice on the turkey and sprinkle it with shredded carrot. Then on the lay a slice of provolone cheese over the
carrot then a green pepper ring on top of the cheese. Sprikle with sprouts. Cover with the other slice, lettuce side down.
The letuce should be stuck to the bread with honey mustard so it doesn't fall off when you turn it upside down to cover the
sandwich. Slice sandwich in half with a knife. Wrap in tightly in plastic wrap. Use too much wrap. Tape on label. Tadaaa!
Weighs one pound. Costs Four Bucks.

Geraldine Ferraro
Wednesday, March 12, 2008
Click the Caveman to see what white people like. (Thanks Jim)
"If Obama was a white man, he would not be in this position," she continued. "And if he was a woman (of any color) he would not be in this position. He happens to be very lucky to be who he is. And the country is caught up in the concept."
And Clinton is not denouncing and rejecting. That's a shame.
My mother took me to the Geraldine Ferraro rally at Burlington's Memorial Auditorium in 1984. (I've also seen Jerry Brown and Al Gore there.) The day after George H.W. Bush debated her, he said "Yeah, we tried to kick a little ass last night." Two years later Ferraro's son John A. Zaccaro Jr., then 24 was busted for selling cocaine. He was punished for that two years later by having to live on College Street here in Burlington for six months.
Ferraro and her running mate lost 49 states in 1984. They were running on the "one-state strategy." Burlington pol Howard Dean is considered to be a visionary because of his "50 State Strategy." I don't see what the hype is about. There are fifty states, thus a "fifty-state strategy."
Yeah, not the smartest-timed comment. However, you can't say she's not raising a completely invalid point. Don't get me wrong, Obama has earned his stripes. But so much of this campaign has been anchored on race AND gender. I think the same comment GF made about Obama many have made about Hillary. Now, even if both were white men, they'd be a helluva lot better then 57-Flavors, I mean 57-position Kerry. Sounds like GF was trying for, and misstated badly, a pro-women in government position.
Needless to say, she didn't do Hillary any favors there.
"If Obama was a white man, he would not be in this position,"
I guess it depends on your definition of valid. If Obama's "position" is that of an African American running for president, then it would be impossible for him to be in it, were he of another race.
That's about the only logic I can see to what she said. But of course the larger story is Hillary's reaction, which I find unacceptable.
Aside from the a priori nature of Ferraro's statement, everything else about it implied that Barack Obama was the beneficiary of some kind of affirmative action program, and Hillary (a woman of any race)is the victim of a sexist media bias in this election.
It's a racist slight by the Clinton campaign to win the hearts and minds of the racists in Pennsylvania. I felt she won New Hampshire because of racism, then the whole 'Jesse won SC' thing, then Ed Rendell saying some people won't vote for a black. Now Ferraro.
Is it safe to say Hillary would not be in this "position" had it not been for her marriage to Bill? Sure, if I mean the position of a former first lady running for president.
This sort of stuff is just silly. But if Hillary wants to use racism as a means of keeping her campaign on life-support, maybe it will do some good by shedding light on the underbelly of modern bigotry.
In any event- you reap what you sow. Look what happened to Vic Morrow's character in Twilight Zone: The Movie.
Oh, no question GF is suggesting that Obama is benefiting from being a minority. And to your point, she simultaneously ignores whatever benefits Clinton has been getting from being Bill's wife. Which, when you think about it, is a funny concept.
Random question: you think Obama's mother ever feels slighted by any of this?
The point being: you ever hear anything about Tiger Woods being 1/2 Thai? We have an interesting way of combating racism: we are only willing to talk about race based of physical traits. That is, we maintain a discourse based solely on how people look. If we think and talk in the same ways we have for 500 years, my guess is, not much will change....
Right on to comment #3 And right on to you, sister!
we are only willing to talk about race based of physical traits
That makes sense. Physical traits are what define race. Otherwise you're talking about ethnicity, or the culture of a race.
I don't care about Tiger Woods, and I am not part of the culture of golf.
Obama is half European and half African, but you only have to have a little African blood to be considered black in this country. I think his mother probably understood that.
Some people question Obama's blackness because he is not the decendent of slaves, but again that speaks to culture and not race per se.
I don't care about any of this. I would never vote for or against a candidate because of his race.
My point is that by continuing to discuss 'race' in these ways, comments like GF will continue. Dichotomies will always bring out the worst in people.
"That makes sense. Physical traits are what define race. Otherwise you're talking about ethnicity, or the culture of a race."
Not exactly. Your own point about Obama not being 'black enough' for some people is a conflation of physical race and cultural heritage, is it not? "Race" is rarely if ever just physical, but our discourse in this country almost always based on the view that it can be....
If you're talking about the cultural heritage that surrounds a given physical race it's easy to conflate the two. It's like a Venn diagram depicting two nearly overlapping circles. If you didn't look closely you think there is only one.
"Race" is rarely if ever just physical
True, but you do need a little of the blood of a given race to be considered a member of it. I can adopt black culture all I want, but at the end of the day I'll still only be an honorary member.
Same with Judaism, for me. Honorary. Well I guess with Judaism I could convert, in theory. But Cassandra will tell you that that's harder than it looks...
Shit, man! If Eliot Spitzer wasn't an Austrian Jew, he wouldn't be in this position now!
I found it interesting watching Ferraro on H&C the day she resigned, saying "THEY" (and i can only infer she means the "Republican Hate Mongers") leaked the quote to the major media outlets to hurt Hillary.
Give me a fucking BREAK!
whatever happened to taking personal responsibility for what you say?
and how does "Geraldine the Prophet" know how this would all play if BO were white, or a woman? Seeing how I dont see skin treatments or a sex change operation in his future, the point is moot. She should know this, and never opened her fucking mouth about it.
but she did, and she shouldn't bitch about the fallout.
Agreed. By the same logic however, we can't assume our like or dislike of any candidate has NOTHING to do with race or gender. That is, our decision are informed by what is, not what might have been. Thus, yes, race and gender have both influenced where things stand today. But, in that sense, race and gender ALWAYS affect how we think and vote. The question, I would think, she was getting at is: do those play a more important role this time around? And should they?
I'm playing devil's advocate a bit here because I can't agree with the statement that his race, or her gender make no difference regarding how we think about things. OF COURSE they do. We can't avoid it. Not that it needs to be avoided. But it's no moral high-ground to suggest we aren't in some way affected by the realities before us.
Not that we could have expected GF's comment, but what if someone on Obama's side was quoted as saying "Well, if she were a white man, she'd never have gotten this far..." Can you imagine the fallout??
Seeing how I dont see skin treatments or a sex change operation in his future, the point is moot.
Of course it's moot, Stech, and of course she knows that. She was probably paid a cool million in a Caymen account to do her race-baiting hit-and-run... look at the follow-up from her resignation letter- "The Obama campaign is attacking me to hurt you."- Ferraro
Read: Black man attacking white woman, after using afirmative action to steal white job.
Hillary should just drop out now and become McCain's running mate.
"anonymous said... Agreed. By the same logic however, we can't assume our like or dislike of any candidate has NOTHING to do with race or gender."
I agree. Race cant be separated from this contest, but I say leave personal bias for or against the classic "black vs white vs male vs female" shit at the door of the polling booth. vote the best fucking possible person.
EVERYONE KNOWS race and gender are an issue. the voters KNOW IT. All I am saying is having the Pols callously throwing the "Race/Gender issue" out there is taking away energy from real problems that need real resolutions... UNBELIEVABLY ENOUGH, at a time when they should be solidifying THIER BASE BEFORE THE CONVENTION!
"Not that we could have expected GF's comment, but what if someone on Obama's side was quoted as saying "Well, if she were a white man, she'd never have gotten this far..." Can you imagine the fallout??"
For some reason, I cant ever model a scenario where that would ever happen. If you have a model you want to share.. be my guest. would be interested to hear it. I geek on political scenarios.

Yeah Haik, thanks for pointing that out.
All I had seen was the Hannity and Combes spot till tonight. I just read the Resign Letter right now off of ABC. I find it interesting that in the H&C interview, she denied speaking to Hill herself about this, let the letter sounds so personal, that I have a hard time swallowing that there was "no contact" between the two.
As far as a Mac/Hill ticket... "I dont think even Vegas would take that bet baby!" - (Said in my best KOJAK voice.)
"For some reason, I cant ever model a scenario where that would ever happen. If you have a model you want to share.. be my guest. would be interested to hear it. I geek on political scenarios."
Oh no. Not a chance. But something tells me the backlash would have been much worse. The gender vs. race thing is kinda funny: for a very long time, Clinton didn't want to lean on gender as a "plus". But at the same time, by speaking of them the way we all have, it makes gender seem like a minority trait, like race. (now for the fun part....) Hillary and GF can gripe all they want, but white women have had a MUCH easier go of things thank black men (even half black men). When it comes to equality, there's not even a discussion to be had. And for anyone to suggest that those two started with an even shuffle of the deck would be silly. They started ahead. They're still ahead.
And yes, we should leave all this crap outside of the curtain. If only that were truly possible. In the meantime, having seen them both speak live (if only that were the only criteria!), there's no contest. Oh, that and I don't like her. It the misogynist in me. Just can't help it...
