Take two thick slices of Noonie's day old bread, smear Honey Cup honey mustard
liberally over both. Cover both slices with green leaf lettuce. Then on one slice only lay smoked turkey on the lettuce,
a tomato slice on the turkey and sprinkle it with shredded carrot. Then on the lay a slice of provolone cheese over the
carrot then a green pepper ring on top of the cheese. Sprikle with sprouts. Cover with the other slice, lettuce side down.
The letuce should be stuck to the bread with honey mustard so it doesn't fall off when you turn it upside down to cover the
sandwich. Slice sandwich in half with a knife. Wrap in tightly in plastic wrap. Use too much wrap. Tape on label. Tadaaa!

Irony of IRV

There are a couple of ironic aspects to Burlington's experiment with IRV.
The first is that it remedies a situation that has never occured, namely a mayoral runoff election in this city.
The second irony is a bit more subtle and no doubt lost on all but a wonkish few. One of the selling points of IRV is that- as opposed to the old, 40%+ plurality system, this system is guarenteed to produce majority winner. ...But does it really? ...hmmm?
No. Not really. Beacuse city officials have allowed us the option to rank as many or as few candidates as we wish. If everyone decided to vote for one, and only one candidate, in an election that was crowded and close, then the candidate with the most votes would win, regardless of her percentage total.
So in theory, there could be 100 mayoral candidates in a Burlington IRV race, where all voters chose to rank only their top choice, with 99 candidates getting just under 1% and the winner becoming mayor-elect with just over 1% of the vote.
Or if you really want to get nuts with this: say only one guy comes out and he votes for himself. He would be elected mayor with a single vote, and as the IRV law is written, that would be lawful and there would be no remedy to change the outcome.
Of course the more likely scenario is that someone (Hinda Miller) will be elected on the first ballot.
